EndoCool Helps Major Food Producers Cut Carbon Emissions & Energy Usage

Energy efficiency is a crucial factor in modern food manufacturing, where rising energy costs and sustainability concerns drive the need for more efficient processes.
Food processing and dairy production consume significant amounts of energy for heating, cooling, and mechanical operations. Implementing energy-efficient practices and solutions can reduce costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve overall operational efficiency.

Hilton Food Group has achieved impressive energy savings at its UK headquarters using our EndoCool innovative cooling system enhancement whilst a similar project at Kärntnermilch, one of Austria’s largest milk producing co-operatives, has shown similar improvements.

Cold storage & Comfort Cooling

  • Large milk producing co-operative in Austria.
  • Sub metering isolating chiller consumption.
  • Cold storage unit with 24/7, 365 load.
  • ROI expected within 3 years.

Driving Energy & Carbon Reduction at Hilton Food Group

Hilton Food Group is a leading food packaging company, which produces over 500 million meals annually for UK consumers.

The company implemented EndoCool into one of its chilled water loops within its Huntingdon HQ in March 2023.

Over the 137-day pilot program the project showed an 8.28% reduction in energy consumption, translating to a savings of 23,446 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity. The project is expected to achieve a return on investment within approximately 12 months.

“These results are particularly impressive considering the demanding nature of food production chiller systems, which must operate continuously to maintain product quality and safety,” notes the study findings.

The energy savings achieved during the pilot period also resulted in preventing 4.8 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions from entering the atmosphere. To put this environmental benefit into perspective:

Energy Efficiency at Kärntnermilch (Austria)

A similar proof of concept project on EndoCool was run at Kärntnermilch. One of Austrias largest milk producing co-operatives producing over 100,000,000kg of milk each year.

A pilot of EndoCool was dosed in July 2023 EndoCool into the chilled water system of their processing facility. The chilled water system is used to provide comfort cooling and provide cooling to a cold storage room.

Over the pilot period. There was a recorded 12,951kWh reduction in electrical consumption.

This is a 4.68% improvement in total electrical consumption of the chiller and a 6.68% reduction of the comfort cooling application.

It is important to note that the presence of the cold storage unit with consistent 24/7, 365 loads means that the system is essentially on constantly and the full benefit of EndoCool seen in comfort cooling applications will not materialise in this more continual application. This saving (5-8%) is similar to other steady state applications for data centres or Biomass Boilers.

The site is currently spending 0.1194€ per kWh. This brings a total project saving of 1,546€ with an expected ROI comfortably within 3 years.

The energy savings achieved during the pilot period also resulted in preventing 1.5 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions from entering the atmosphere. To put this environmental benefit into perspective:

Looking to the Future

The success of EndoCool at Hilton Food Group and Kärntnermilch demonstrates the potential for energy-saving technologies in industrial cooling applications. With many food production facilities facing similar challenges in balancing operational requirements with environmental responsibilities, these case studies provide a compelling example of how innovative solutions can address both needs simultaneously.

The achievement is particularly relevant as companies worldwide seek ways to reduce their energy consumption, carbon footprint and meet increasingly stringent environmental targets. The fact that these improvements were achieved in a continuous-operation industrial setting suggests promising applications across various sectors where cooling is essential to operations.
